Help is on the way for European carmakers struggling to deal with an influx of cheap Chinese electric vehicles. The European Commission plans to impose additional tariffs of as much as 36.3% on EVs imported from China after an investigation into subsidies that Beijing doles out to its car industry. The duties are expected to hurt companies including BYD Co., SAIC Motor Corp. and Geely, but also risk affecting Western manufacturers that ship cars made at their Chinese factories to Europe — for example Tesla Inc., whose Chinese-made cars face an additional 9% duty. While the levies may help Europe’s domestic brands to defend their home turf, they’re likely to spur retaliation from Beijing, harming their business in China. . The European Commission formally notified carmakers in June that it would raise duties from the current level of 10%, and also set provisional individual levies. Around two months later, on Aug. 20, Brussels said it would move forward with the tariffs while revising some of the proposed duties. MG maker SAIC, Volvo Car AB parent Geely and BYD face additional duties of 36.3%, 19.3% and 17%, respectively — all slightly lower than what the EU announced in June. The 9% levy for Tesla, which asked to be assessed on a individual basis, is relatively welcome news, as it’s lower than what other manufacturers face. Companies that cooperated with the EU’s probe but weren’t surveyed by EU investigators — such as Dongfeng Motor Group Co. and Nio Inc. — would be hit with a 21.3% duty.
