There is much to commend in “The America First Divide: Protectionism vs. Libertarianism” (op-ed, Sept. 21). But does Vivek Ramaswamy really believe that “Donald Trump masterfully bridges the divide between these two policy camps”?
On trade and national security, Mr. Ramaswamy wants to “eliminate U.S. dependence on China” by “expanding trade relationships with countries such as Japan, South Korea, India and the Philippines.” I agree, and I presume this is why Mr. Ramaswamy supports America’s re-entry into the Trans-Pacific Partnership. As president, however, Mr. Trump withdrew the U.S. from that trade agreement. On this issue, Mr. Trump doesn’t “masterfully bridge” any policy divide. He’s merely a protectionist.
